Auto Transformers

An autotransformer is a special type of transformer that utilizes a single winding to adjust voltage levels. Unlike a standard transformer with separate coils for input and output, an autotransformer has portions of the same coil serving as both the primary and secondary sides. This design allows for a more efficient transfer of energy, particularly when the voltage change required is relatively small. Autotransformers find applications in voltage regulation for transmission lines, starting induction motors, and providing adjustable voltage outputs. They are also used in situations where size and cost are important factors, as their simpler design makes them more compact and economical compared to traditional transformers. However, it is important to note that due to the lack of isolation between the input and output circuits, autotransformers may not be suitable for applications requiring complete electrical separation.
